En los cien años de su nacimiento:

• Su apellido se pronuncia como suena, con u, acento francés, y no camí, como me dijeron en el colegio.

• Nació en la Algeria francesa. Eso quiere decir que uno de los más grandes escritores de la literatura francesa de todos los tiempos no era, técnicamente, francés, sino argelino.

• Fue criado en medio de una tremenda pobreza por su madre española, muda y analfabeta. Su padre murió cuando él era muy pequeño.

• Sufrió toda su vida de tuberculosis. En la foto que anexo a esta nota aparece fumando.

• Se ganó la vida como periodista de diversos diarios en Algeria y Francia. Su ideología, expresada en sus reportajes, lo llevó a perder repetidas veces su empleo.

• Obtuvo el Premio Nobel de Literatura cuando solo tenía 43 años de edad.

• Murió tres años después, a la edad de 46, en un accidente automovilístico.
